All you need to know about US Soccer Camp
To be honest, coaches run soccer camps with the intention to make extra money out of your pocket. However, it doesn't mean soccer camp itself is bad. With the right camp and right coaches, it is worth the time and money spent and most importantly you will have a wonderful soccer camp experience you ever had.
The basics
In the U.S. girl soccer camp system, we can roughly divided 5 types of coaching arrangements as follows:
1) Local coaches: Here local coaches refer to high school or junior team coaches that conduct soccer camp for young soccer players.
2) Regional teams: Here we refer to more sophisicated coaches from MLS or professional suppliers that conduct camps with the intension to make some extra money and to improve relationship with community.
3) College Coaches: They are univertiy coaches who want to find a raising star by conducting a camp.
4) National soccer camp: More or less the same as the regional teams.
5) EPYSA: Soccer development program that help to figure out potential players and as a mean to support coaches. It should be worth noted that this type of camp usually involve intensive training schedule.
In the recent years, more and more international camp or soccer tour was set up (e.g. china soccer camp) to make the camp more attractive to youngsters.
How to choose a girl soccer camp?
Quality of the camps vary among different systems. For instance, type 1 camp was usually held by relatively non-prefessional coaches with the aid of high school players, while regioanl camp may have more prestigious coach in the camp. Having a good coach in the camp will definitely make a difference. You should always check to make sure a prestigious coach is actually in charge of the camp and not directing the camp in "remote control"
Other than the quality of coaches, the size of camp do make a difference. Small camps rarely possess the resource for better fitness and mental training than larger camps do. You should be aware of the brochure received when deciding which camp to choose. Some small camp will simply reprint their brochure from past year that make the camp significantly less interesting than you may expect.
Our advise is that you should send your girl to a college-based camp to maximize exposure to the university. Your girl will perform much better in a less pressured soccer camp environment and will have a better chance to impressive the university coach in such case.
